How to make Keto Vodka Lemonade?

We used to go to Red Robin for their bottomless french fries and juicy hamburgers. Every time we went I’d get a Skinny Spiked Lemonade. I loved the sweet, tangy flavor and I especially loved the fact that it was super low calorie. I didn’t ask about net carbs because I honestly didn’t want to know.

Then one day we went and it wasn’t on the menu anymore.

The lesson I learned is that I needed to learn to make a keto version of my favorite drink. Best of all, it’s quick and easy to do this with a few different choices in what I put in the recipe. The first thing is the sweetener. Using a keto sweetener instead of the sugar ladened fruit juice or simple syrup that many mixed cocktails have. With all of the sugar free syrups like Torani, and the water enhancers like MIO, you can make almost any drink low carb as long as you have a little imagination. In other keto cocktails, I use monk fruit sweetener which is a great keto friendly sweetener alternative to added sugar or fruit juice. Erythritol is another keto friendly sugar substitute I love to use in my recipes.

If you want this to be a strictly lemon flavored lemonade then substitute lemon vodka for the lime and use only lemon juice for the the main juice and lemon slices as a garnish. I really like the flavor that a little lime brings to this cocktail recipe though.

Is lemonade good for a keto diet?

Regular homemade lemonade is made with fresh lemon and a sweetener like simple syrup. Simple syrup is just sugar dissolved in water. Fresh lemon juice is usually quite tart by itself so adding sugar makes it easier to drink. Regular lemonade has about 25 grams of sugar in an 8 ounce serving. 25 grams. A sugar packet has 4 grams of sugar. That means just one glass of regular lemonade has over 8 sugar packets in it. So no, regular lemonade isn’t good for a keto diet.

A sugar free lemonade like this keto lemonade recipe is perfect for your keto diet. That’s because we don’t add over 8 sugar packets per glass. Ha ! No simple syrup, no sugar packets, just fresh lemon juice and fresh lime juice in this recipe.

Spiked Lemonade FAQs

Here are the answers to the most often asked questions about spiked lemonade.

What alcohol is good to mix with lemonade?

It really depends on what you like. Some types of spirits give more flavor than others. From the least flavor adding alcohol to the most the ones I’d recommend would be:

  • Vodka
  • Flavored vodka
  • White wine
  • Gin
  • Tequila
  • Rum
  • Flavored rum (coconut is yummy)
  • Bourbon

You can use all lemons if you prefer to leave out the lime.

What’s a John Daly cocktail?

It’s the alcoholic version of an Arnold Palmer. The Arnold Palmer is a non-alcoholic drink which has iced tea and traditional lemonade. It is said that the legendary golfer used to drink it regularly. John Daly is a colorful golfer that is known for his big swing and self indulgent life style. Specifically how he enjoyed smoking and drinking. A John Daly is the alcoholic version of the Arnold Palmer. It has the same iced tea and lemonade ingredients with the addition of vodka usually.

As we now know, regular lemonade has lots of sugar. Like, 8 packets of sugar. Clearly this won’t work well on a keto diet. Use this recipe but use a squirt of lemonade water enhancer and a squirt of sweet tea water enhancer. Some people prefer bourbon to the vodka.

Is gin and lemonade good?

Yes! You can easily use all gin in this recipe to replace the vodka. Gin has a unique flavor that goes well with the citrus flavors of the lemon and lime in this recipe.

What is the best lemon juice to for keto lemonade?

Freshly squeezed lemon juice tastes amazing in this low carb lemonade recipe. Bottled lemon juice is much easier than buying fresh lemons, cutting them, and then getting the juice out while picking out the seeds. Just remember that most bottled lemon juice is pasteurized (aka heated). This kills possible bad bacteria but thankfully the vitamin C isn’t killed so it still has some vitamin C. It just may be a bit less than freshly squeezed lemon juice.
