This low carb cocktail is cold and slushy which is just right for hot summer days. I’m calling it a Tropical Margarita Slush because it’s full of tropical flavor and it reminds me of all of the trips to 7-11 for slushies that I made when I was a little kid. You’ll enjoy this grown up version and with 0 carbs you’ll be able to enjoy it without guilt!
For this margarita recipe you’ll need: silver tequila, lime juice, sugar free coconut pineapple water enhancer, powdered ginger, aromatic bitters, and ice. For color and to make it feel even more tropical, you can add a lime wedge or lime slice.

Tropical Margarita Slush Backstory
It’s July and that means that summer is in full swing for most of us in the northern hemisphere. It’s definitely making it’s presence here in Dallas Texas with the thin red line on the thermometer hitting 98F this afternoon with a breeze that scrapes across your skin. If you’ve experienced summers where the temperature goes triple digits you totally understand how a breeze can scrape. That breeze holds the promise of even hotter weather to come.
With those kinds of high summer temperatures you need something cold and icy, or at least I do. I drink water to stay hydrated but there comes a point when I just want to sit down with an icy margarita glass like an adult.
Like a Tropical Margarita Slush.
Tropical drinks trick your mind into thinking that you’ve cooled down. I don’t understand the magic of it all, I just know that it’s true. I can drink ice water or iced tea all day long or I can sip on a perfectly done gin and tonic but neither of those things will create an island breeze in my imagination. I remember trying different margaritas on vacation once. I tried a Hawaiian Margarita, Mango Margarita, and a Pineapple Margarita when I visited Mexico and boy did they cool me down. This tropical cocktail does exactly that. It makes me feel cool.
In more ways than one.
So what if the tropical breeze is created by my ceiling fans and air conditioner (not thinking about the electric bill). So what if the sound of the ocean waves is actually the dogs electric water dish (it’s super cool! It has a fountain that keeps the water fresh). Summer is made for relaxing whether that is on the beach or on your porch or in my case in the back yard with the kids and dogs. And long summer evenings just don’t get better than this.
Unless you really are at the beach or on a cruise. That would definitely be better.
What Alcohol Goes With Margaritas?
A frozen margarita is the perfect way to enjoy some tequila. Thankfully you don’t need to spend the money on high end tequila or what my friends call “sipping tequila” because of the flavor. The really cheap tequila brands almost seem harsh to me. For a margarita, I like the subtle flavor of a silver tequila which is steps above the cheap stuff but won’t break the bank. It’s more subtle and won’t overwhelm the tropical fruit flavors you want to come through in this frozen drink recipe.
What Tropical Fruits Can You Use?
Because this is a low carb cocktail, the normal fruit that you find in a tropical margarita won’t work because of the high carb count from all the sugar. Even margarita mix has added sugar which doesn’t fit in a low carb lifestyle. So skip the pineapple juice, orange juice, and coconut water. I use sugar free tropical flavored water enhancers to get all the tropical fruit flavor without all the sugar. You’ll get all the flavors without all the sugar.
