Staying out of the candy aisle gets harder and harder as Halloween creeps closer and closer. The candy corn, peanut butter & molasses taffy, and chocolate bellow out a siren song that I can’t ignore. This has nothing to do what-so-ever with cocktails, of course, just that I have a hard time passing up Halloween candy. Of course, the fact that the candy finds its way to the grocery shelves around Labor Day doesn’t help a bit.
We don’t celebrate Halloween for a variety of personal reasons but a spooky cocktail or two appeals to the part of me that stayed up all night reading gothic romances when I was a teen. Maybe I watched too many episodes of The Munsters or the Addams Family. Serving a chalice (or even a paper cup) of this inky black cocktail during a Game of Thrones episode only adds to the ambiance and the experience. A black and white party or wedding are the perfect venues for this black colored cocktail, too!
Don’t just think of it as a Halloween drink.
The flavor is warm, smoky, and spicy. Your lips tingle from the cloves, ginger, and chipotle with every sip. Spiced rum and tequila give the drink more dimension with layers of subtle flavor. Let’s be real, the vodka is in there just to add more alcohol to the mix. My uncle smoked a pipe that had the most amazing smell of cherry, vanilla, and something else.. This cocktail tastes the way my uncle’s pipe used to smell – I can’t explain it better than that.
Activated charcoal is used to achieve the inky, black color. Don’t say “no way” just yet.
Activated charcoal is available in the pharmacy or at the health food store. The capsules actually have a lot of health benefits, including detoxing your body. I won’t say it keeps you from having a hangover but hey — it can’t hurt. You pull open the capsule and use the powder inside, mixing it into the drink.
Activated charcoal is completely free of flavor but it does add dense black color. Use Food coloring if you prefer but that gets messy — believe me I tried.

Activated charcoal comes in capsules at my local store but I recently found the charcoal powder on Amazon! No more messes from taking apart capsules! Rhubarb bitters are tangy and add a nice little spark to this cocktail.
