Halloween Black Colored Cocktails

Halloween is tough when doing low carb. Staying out of the candy aisle gets harder and harder as Halloween creeps closer and closer. The candy corn, peanut butter cups, and fun sized chocolate bars sing out a siren song that I can’t ignore. This has nothing to do with cocktails, just hoping I’m not alone having a hard time passing up Halloween candy. Of course, the fact that the candy finds its way to the grocery shelves around Labor Day doesn’t help now does it?

We love to celebrate Halloween for a variety of personal reasons. A spooky Halloween cocktail or two appeals to the part of me that also stayed up all night reading gothic romances when I was a teen. Maybe I watched too many episodes of The Munsters or the Addams Family. Serving this recipe in a chalice (or even a paper cup) of this inky black colored cocktail during a Game of Thrones episode only adds to the ambiance and the experience. A black and white party or wedding are the perfect venues for this black colored cocktail too.

Yes, this isn’t just a Halloween only drink.

Crazy Black Magic, Black Cocktails

The flavor in this drink is warm, smoky, and spicy. Your lips tingle from the cloves, ginger, and chipotle with every sip. Spiced rum and tequila give the drink more dimension with layers of subtle flavor. Let’s be real, the vodka is in there just to add more alcohol to the mix. My uncle smoked a pipe that had the most amazing smell of cherry, vanilla, and something else. I think the smell was whiskey. This cocktail tastes the way my uncle’s pipe used to smell. I can’t explain how amazing that smell was and this drink is way better than that.

Black Cocktail with Charcoal or dye?

So how do you make a cocktail black in color? Do you use black vodka? Dark Rum? Coffee? Activated charcoal can be used to achieve the inky, black color. Don’t say “no way” just yet. Activated charcoal is available in the pharmacy or at your health food store. Some think activated charcoal has health benefits such as detoxing your body. Sorry no, it won’t keep you from having a hangover. You pull open the capsule and use the powder inside to mix it into the drink.

Activated charcoal is completely free of flavor but it does add dense black color. The downside of the charcoal is it can separate. Use food coloring if you prefer. You’ll need red, blue, and green food coloring. That combo makes black food coloring lol. I tried this and added a few drops of each color until it was black. But I don’t have the steadiest hand so I made a mess. The easiest way to make a bottle of liqueur black like coffee, try gel paste. Black gel paste has no taste and is very concentrated so just a few drops will be enough.
